Ant Facts

Ants are the #1 insect pest problem in the United States.
There are more than 20,000 species of ants and fossil records date back 130 million years
Researchers estimate that ants, termites and cockroaches account for more than 95% of the pesticides used in the urban environment.
Ants are attracted to sweets, grease and water. They often invade homes, hummingbird feeders, pet food dishes and potted plants looking for food.
Hummingbirds and orioles won't use a feeder contaminated by ants. That's because bacteria and foreign substances on the ants quickly contaminate the nectar.
In a national study conducted for LineGuard, over 18% of people with hummingbird feeders reported problems with ant invasions.
Ants are often the reason for misdirected pesticide sprays on plants. Ants "farm" aphids and scales and prevent predators like ladybird beetles from eliminating the insect problems. Once ants are eliminated, aphids and scale often vanish.
Ants are a barrier to biological control or organic production because they protect nuisance pests such as aphids and scales that harm plants, and prevent beneficial insects from doing their job.
Entomologists believe that aphids, the top insect pest on outdoor plants, are actually more of a problem because of ants.
Ants are attracted to low-level energy fields such as electrical outlets and often live in electrical outlets.
